Why You Should Publish for Android and iOS

Yesterday we spoke about how the Apple App Store had its best year yet in terms of apps sold, with over $10 billion in sales for 2013 and a record $1 billion of those sales taking place in December in the run up to the holiday season. Let’s not beat around the bush here, apps are absolutely huge business.

In May of the same year the App Store recorded their 50th billion download, those figures are gargantuan, so vast that you have to take a moment to actually digest the enormity of the zero’s involved! Apps are such big business because smartphone usage has risen at such an exponential rate that it has become an absolute necessity for businesses to have, and maintain, an online presence through an app.

Research carried out by Business Insider has shed light on some very interesting and informative facts and figures which correlates with the ever expanding and extremely lucrative app world. 6% of the world now own a tablet and over 22% of the world’s population now own a smartphone, the research also points out that it was mid 2012 that personal computers fell by the wayside to the new kids on the block, the smartphone and the tablet. It was during this period that the global per-capita rate of smartphones outperformed personal computers for the first time. The same report highlights the following:

  • In 2009 global smartphone penetration was 5%; in 2014 it is around 22%, an increase of nearly 1.3 billion smartphones in four years.
  • Tablets are showing even quicker adoption rates than smartphones, whereas smartphones took nearly four years to reach 6% penetration from when the devices first started to register on a global scale, it took tablets just two years to achieve the same results.

These figures reinforce the undoubted fact that smartphones and tablet adoption has been both widespread and expeditious, and this growth is not isolated to the devices themselves. With such a dramatic and unheralded rise in usage of these connected devices, apps for use in conjunction with them have risen in a similarly impressive trajectory.

But why do I need an app?
In a nutshell; convenience, convenience for the consumer. You are placing yourself in the handbags and pockets of consumers worldwide through their smartphone with your app. You only have to glance at some of the figures above to realize the numbers this approach can entail. They will be able to access your information and content where and when they want, mobile apps make your content more accessible, engaging and crucially houses it all in one place rather than expecting the consumer to surf all over the web locating it. Many apps include the option for reading offline which is especially beneficial for magazines and newspapers, apps really can reach that far.

Much the same as having a website was once the essential part of your business plan, the app has now risen to the fore, the world has gone mobile and for your business grow and prosper with it, you need an app. Over 50% of your web traffic is now mobile, can you afford to miss out on this volume of traffic?

Android or iOS?
It is estimated that the Apple app store makes $5.1 million per day while the Google play store is somewhat further down the revenue ladder at $1.1 million per day and according to estimates by Citigroup analyst Mark May, Google Play only, and I say ‘only’ with tongue firmly in cheek, garnered $1.3 billion in the same period as the App Store registered $10 billion. Now, and this is where it gets interesting, that figure is 13% of Apple apps store revenue yet android accounts for 75% of all downloaded apps (Apple’s share was 18%).

You would be forgiven for thinking, at first glance, that App Store was the only option for your business if you were investigating the options for creating an app for your company, not so. The Google play store, while dwarfed at the time of writing by Apples behemoth, is actually growing at a quicker rate than the App Store and when you take into account that Android has the lion’s share of the marketplace with over 1.9 billion installed base devices compared to Apples 682 million devices then it is not insurmountable to assume that androids share of the app marketplace is set to continue to flourish.

In fact in a report by Citigroups Mark May, featured in Barrons, he highlights that the “Google Play store that serves up applications and content to mobile devices running its Android operating system could see 43% compounded annual growth in revenue between now and 2017, growing from $1.3 billion to $5.2 billion.”

So it’s clear that android has a bright future and one that shouldn’t be dismissed lightly, while iOS has its obvious strengths it would be folly to rely on it alone. It is impossible to separate one from the other, to gain maximum reach you have to be available on all platforms, all devices, all operating systems, the only way to do this, (and give your business the chance and exposure it deserves), is to publish on both iOS and Android. But how do I do this you may say?

Well download the 3D Issue trial today and see what the branded app option can do for you and ultimately your business. (By Charlie Gallagher)

Starwood Accelerates Expansion in Australia & The Pacific with 6 New Openings in 2014

Vigorous Growth Will be Fuelled by the Iconic Sheraton Brand, as well as by a Strategic Industry Alliance between Starwood Preferred Guest and Virgin Australia

Sydney, Australia – 19 February 2014 – Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) today announced at the Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expos (AIME) that it plans to forge ahead with expansion in Australia and the Pacific, opening six new hotels and resorts this year. Reflecting strong demand in the region, the vigorous growth will be fuelled by Sheraton, Starwood’s largest and most global brand, as well as by a dynamic travel industry partnership between Starwood Preferred Guest® (SPG®), Starwood’s innovative loyalty program, and Virgin Australia.

Within this region, Starwood is targeting both established markets, such as Australia; and increasingly popular resort destinations, including Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia. The six new properties to open in 2014 include Sheraton Melbourne Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane in Australia; Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji; Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa; Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort and Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel.

“We are embarking on a milestone year for Starwood’s growth and development in the Pacific,” said Sean Hunt, Regional Vice President, Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “I am confident that the strength of our brands, especially Sheraton, will fulfil robust demand for upper-upscale hospitality offerings in Australia, the region’s mature market, as well as in emerging resort isles – providing a range of excellent facilities for both business and leisure travellers.”

Starwood currently operates 14 hotels in the Pacific region, with nine hotels in Australia, including Sheraton on the Park in Sydney; The Westin Sydney; The Westin Melbourne; Sheraton Mirage Resort & Spa, Gold Coast; Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort; and Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa. In addition, there are three hotels in Fiji and two in New Caledonia. At year-end 2014, the company expects to have 20 operating hotels and resorts. In addition, The Westin Perth is in the pipeline for 2017 openings.

Strong Demand for Iconic Sheraton Brand
Among Starwood’s portfolio of nine unique lifestyle brands, Sheraton in particular plays a leading role in maintaining the firm’s premier position in the region. The iconic brand currently operates six hotels in the Pacific; by the end of 2014, Sheraton will nearly double its presence in the region with five openings. Last year, the Sheraton brand celebrated its 100th hotel in Asia Pacific, and the brand anticipates the achievement of its 500th global hotel milestone by 2016.

Lack of supply presents pent-up demand for lodging in Australia
Australia presents significant growth opportunities for Starwood in 2014. The hospitality landscape is characterized by a lack of new supply, even in the face of steady demand growth. Sheraton Melbourne will mark the Sheraton brand's return to the city after nearly a decade. Located at the Paris end of the CBD, the hotel will feature 174 well-appointed guest rooms; a bistro-style signature restaurant; The Terrace Bar; a heated indoor pool; a well-equipped Business Centre and over 650 square metres of meetings space. Sheraton Melbourne provides guests with the brand’s signature amenities, including the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper® Bed, Link@Sheraton(SM) experienced with Microsoft® for seamless connectivity, the Sheraton Fitness Programmed by Core® Performance programme, a heated indoor pool, and signature spa.

In time for the G20 Summit, which will take place in Brisbane this November, Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane will open in March, marking the first internationally branded property to enter the Brisbane CBD market in over ten years. A new-build property, the 246-room hotel will offer uncomplicated comforts that are big on value. In addition to state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a fully-equipped gym and an all-day dining restaurant and casual cafe/bar, Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane will feature the brand’s Simple Pleasures(SM) -- a great night’s sleep in a Four Points Signature Bed, free bottled water daily and High Speed Internet Access.

“Australia is benefitting from record low supply and the global travel revolution, with continued increase in domestic travel and a robust outlook for international visitors led by the growing number of Chinese travellers,” says Matthew Fry, Senior Vice President, Acquisitions & Development, Asia Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “Starwood’s powerful network, global booking platforms and loyal customer base enable developers and investors to capitalize on this upswing in development.”

Dynamic Upmarket Resort Portfolio
Starwood is leveraging the popularity of the Pacific islands among increasingly affluent global travellers, with the openings of Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji and Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa this year. Sheraton will also debut in Samoa, marking the introduction of the first international hospitality brand to the market, through the recently signed management agreement of Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort and Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel.

Situated five minutes from the airport on the island of Upolu’s western coast, Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Resort will feature 1,000 metres of white sand beachfront and ocean views from the comfort of 140 guest rooms and suites. The resort, which is expected to be re-launched by mid-2014, will also offer tennis courts, a large outdoor fantasy pool, multiple restaurants and bars, and two well-equipped meeting spaces. Additionally, the resort will have easy access to a full-service casino and nearby golf courses.

Also on Upolu, Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel will house 198 guest rooms and suites on a waterfront location in Apia, Samoa’s commercial hub and capital. The property will cater to a range of events, from intimate executive meetings to large social gatherings. In addition to signature amenities, the resort will provide a restaurant and bar, a large outdoor fantasy pool, pool bar and will be located in close proximity to a full-service casino.

Nestled within Fiji’s idyllic Mamanuca group, Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji will enhance Starwood’s already solid positioning in Fiji, complementing the existing Sheraton Denarau Villas, Sheraton Fiji Resort and The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa Fiji. The resort, scheduled to open in March 2014, will feature 101 guest rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, a “Gold Class” style theatre/cinema accommodating up to 50 guests, three distinctive dining venues, a modern day spa and several state-of-the-art function spaces.

With a distinctive Melanesian-French flavour amidst natural splendour, the new build Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort & Spa will open on New Caledonia’s Grande Terre in July 2014. The 180-room resort will boast two large meeting spaces and a house reef that offers spectacular diving and snorkelling opportunities. Guests can also partake in many aquatic and land sports, join ocean or river excursions, and hike on lush trails, among other recreational pursuits.

All properties will feature Sheraton signature amenities, including Sheraton Fitness Programmed by Core Performance™; Link@Sheraton(SM) experience with Microsoft®; and the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper® Bed, LCD flat panel television and generous work spaces in each guest room.

Asia Pacific

Konsep Mobil Otomatis Akan Merombak Cara Kerja Konvensional

Starwood’s Wines of the World

Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort to welcome the arrival of the new selection to the Starwood’s Wines of the World

Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort is pleased to celebrate the new collection of Starwood’s Wines of the World. A wine program offering premium wines by the glass from 30 partners in over 250 hotels throughout Asia Pacific. The shortlisted wine partners include Concha Y Toro from Chile, Beringer from USA and Domaine Pascal Jolivet from France. To reveal their refreshed wine list, Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort hosted a Social Hour session dedicated to newly listed wine partners at The Lounge on 7 February 2014, from 5 pm – 7 pm with great connections being made, rustic food from Bene and live acoustic entertainment.

As one of the forefronts in bringing innovative epicurean concepts to Bali, Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort once again presented an inspiring affair of fine wines and mouthwatering nibbles with farm-to-table artisanal stations at The Lounge specially prepared by the resort’s talented culinary team of Bene, Italian Kitchen. Joined by the resort’s guests, clienteles, local media friends and socialites, this event was held in conjunction with the brand’s signature program, Social Hour, designed to foster social interaction among guests and aimed to introduce a specially curated menu of Sheraton Select premium wines that are available as a permanent resort offering. These wines rated 90+ by Wine Spectator are amongst the best in their category and such wines served by glass in Bali is not only unique, but compares favorably to the more widely available entry level wines listed in comparable venues.

“Through the Starwood’s Wines of the World program, we have contributed in familiarizing some of the most renowned names in the wine industry to travelers in Bali and empowered the guests to easily savor some of the most highly rated wines in the world during their stay. This event is one of the ways to put our resort’s footmark on culinary map in Bali as one of the leading resorts that continuously strives to enhance the guest experiences with new social interactions and believe Social Hour to be a great program for both business and leisure guests”, said Dario Orsini, General Manager of Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort.

‘Wines of the World’ program offers a great variety from both the New World and the Old World. An intense selection of varietals allows guests to choose from a crisp fresh white to a wonderful full bodied red. Long ago wine was always associated with a meal, today, it is increasingly the drink of choice allowing the wine aficionados to enjoy what they like to drink, whenever they wish, and to compare some of the finest available. Internal research has also been conducted by the Sheraton brand during the Social Hour program pilot period found that 66% of guests would be more inclined to purchase wine while travelling if there was a premium wine program offered.

Social Hour at the Lounge – 5 pm – 7 pm
The Lounge at Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort is a spectacular indoor/outdoor gathering place overlooking the Indian Ocean. Guests can sample tasting selections from Sheraton’s premium wine program, refresh their palate with Equil still or sparkling water and nibble on Color Your Plate™ canapés or artisanal cheeses with house-baked breads.
