‘Slave to the Bean’ by Bill Barnett

“Before I came to Asia, I used to think only girls wore lipstick,” Mr Barnett says, musing on his three-decade-long highly-caffeinated careen through the corridors of power in big hotels and latterly as high level advisor and consultant.

Disruptive current events that came as an onslaught of pure craziness in 2015 become storylines throughout the book. Barnett’s running commentary is woven into the haphazard adventures of a professional traveler and punctuated by a live lived in seat 9D. “If you wanted the Disney version, you came to the wrong place,” he said.

The frenetic travel schedule that connects the stories in 'Slave to the Bean' was a habit learned early for Barnett, who by the age of 19 was road manager for Grammy nominated singer songwriter John Hiatt. He also worked for a record label, in music publishing and as a rock and roll magazine contributor.

Restless and looking for a change he took to the road in a series of strange misadventures of working as a blackjack dealer in Reno, driver on a dude ranch in Wyoming, night clerk of a wilderness lodge in Alaska and a stint in a ski resort which resulted in a near death experience in an avalanche.

Barnett’s sideways journey to Asia began on a small island in Hawaii, when he reading the story of Michael Rockefeller who went missing in Papua New Guinea. Chasing the ghost of Rockefeller, he sold all his belongings, bought a one way ticket to PNG and never looked back.

He arrived in the Philippines the day the People's Power Revolution overthrew Ferdinand Marcos travelled around India for a year in a rattletrap car, and was the first American hotelier to work in post-War Vietnam.

In the past two decades has been appointed to glitzy roles as asset manager of luxury properties managed by leading chains such as Four Season, Ritz-Carlton and Grand Hyatt to senior executive roles with international hotel chains. His start-up hospitality firm C9 Hotelworks has blossomed into a leading consultant in Asia Pacific with work this year in over 15 countries.

Red Planet Continues Expansion with Flagship Bangkok Hotel

Red Planet Hotels continues to expand its fast-growing value hotel chain with the opening of the 201-room Red Planet Surawong hotel in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The Red Planet Surawong, Bangkok hotel is the group's 26th hotel in Asia and fifth in Thailand. Red Planet also owns hotels in the Philippines (ten), Indonesia (seven), and Japan (four). 



This latest addition features significant improvements to room design, including a full working desk and fridge. The lobby features Apple computers to complement Red Planet's signature free high-speed Wi-Fi, which is offered on unlimited devices throughout all of the company's hotels. 

Red Planet Hotels Chief Executive Officer, Tim Hansing, said the latest addition to the company's portfolio would take the number of rooms it operates in the region to 4,118, and that "there is robust scope to double this number in the coming years".

Commune Hotels & Resorts to Launch Six New Properties in Asia in 2016

Alila, the contemporary luxury brand under Commune Hotels & Resorts and one of the most innovative boutique hotel brands, renowned for its architecture, design and strict eco credentials, will launch six new properties in 2016. The luxury Alila brand is set to expand its portfolio into two new countries, opening new properties in Cambodia and China alongside a third property in Jakarta, Indonesia and a heritage property in India.

Opening in the second quarter next year, Alila SCBD will be Alila’s third property in Jakarta and will serve as a vibrant and modern retreat for both young urbanities and business travellers. Alila SCBD is located in the heart of Jakarta's Financial District, next door to the Indonesia Stock Exchange, with convenient access to leading corporate offices, world-class shopping and entertainment facilities. Guests can choose from one of the 227 contemporary rooms and suites including the Executive Suites set on the top floor and offering access to an exclusive lounge.

The hotel will also be home to the first South East Asian ouchitposts of the Hakkasan, Sake no Hana and the OMNIA luxury lifestyle brands. The two new restaurants and nightclub, managed by Hakkasan Group and owned by investors KJA Jakarta, will ensure the hotel is the ultimate destination for dining and entertainment in the city.

Three new Alila properties are set to launch in China next year starting from the second quarter. Alila Anji will be located in the heart of the Zhejiang province, surrounded by the pristine beauty of bamboo groves and white-tea plantations. As the location of the Oscar winning movie ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, the area is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty thanks to over 60,000 hectares of bamboo groves, with over 40 different species found within the region. The resort will resemble a traditional Chinese village, featuring 74 stately villas and suites with elevated views across the lake, perfect for guests looking for quiet indulgence and fresh air. The first Spa Alila in China will be a destination within itself, with seven treatment rooms and an extensive menu of health, beauty and restorative treatments, including traditional Chinese medicine inspired treatments.

Alila Yangshuo, originally a sugar mill, will now become a historical yet contemporary design resort. As well as 118 rooms, suites and villas, Alila Yangshuo will feature a signature restaurant, exhibition hall, Kids Club, Spa Alila, a meeting loft and library for private gatherings and a stunning infinity-edged pool that connects to the Li River. The third property to open in China next year, Alila Tianxi Lake, will overlook a stunning lake and contemporary luxury golf course. It will also feature 68 suites and 13 villas, two restaurants, an event space, cooking studio, an indoor and outdoor pool, Spa Alila, a library and herb garden.

In Jaipur - India, Alila Fort Bishangarh will launch in the fourth quarter next year following the restoration of the beautiful 230 year-old Rajasthan Fort. Positioned on a granite hill in the Arvalli Mountain Range, with spectacular 360-degree views, the warrior fort is thought to be the only one of its kind to be converted into a heritage resort and is a unique example of the Jaipur Gharana architecture influenced by both the Mughals and the British. The all-suite resort will feature 59 stately suites with stunning views. Leisure facilities within the fort will include an outpost of Spa Alila, two specialty restaurants, an all-day coffee lounge, a bar and cigar room, wine cellar and library. Down the hill, the public areas will include a pool, pool terrace and juice bar, fitness centre and a ‘Play Soldiers Club’ for children.

Alila Villas Koh Russey, Cambodia will launch by the end of the year, the five-star eco resort will be the first ‘Villas’ resort outside Bali. Located amid the Koh Rong archipelago, Alila Villas Koh Russey will be a 15-minute boat ride from the Cambodian coast, offering pristine bays, dramatic peninsulas, white-sand beaches and tropical forests. The resort will feature one and two-bedroom villas, each with its own terrace, private pool and garden. For the ultimate in luxury, the resort’s four-bedroom pool villa features a large living area, kitchen, master bedroom, three guest bedrooms and an expansive outdoor terrace and pool area. Archipelago International – XWORK, Book A Meeting Space


Dalam rangka menyediakan akses cepat ke ribuan ruang pertemuan dengan harga yang terjangkau kepada para wisatawan bisnis maupun profesional, Archipelago International telah bekerja sama dengan XWORK - sebuah aplikasi yang menawarkan cara termudah kepada pekerja profesional untuk dapat memesan ruang kerja ataupun ruang pertemuan secara cepat, mudah, kapanpun dan di manapun.

XWORK adalah sebuah perusahaan teknologi yang menghubungkan pelanggan dengan ruang pertemuan pribadi dengan kapasitas maksimum 25 orang. Dengan aplikasi  XWORX, pelanggan tidak lagi memerlukan waktu yang lama untuk mencari ruang pertemuan. Bahkan, selain menawarkan cara mudah dalam menemukan ruang pertemuan yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan, aplikasi ini juga dapat membantu pelanggan melakukan pemesanan untuk ruang  tersebut dalam waktu kurang dari 45 detik. Ruangan pertemuan ini juga dapat dipesan per-jam (hanya untuk ruangan saja). Dengan aplikasi XWORK, para pelanggan juga dapat memesan ruang pertemuan yang disediakan oleh hotel-hotel di bawah naungan Archipelago International di daerah Jakarta, kapanpun dan dimanapun. Ketika para pelanggan terjebak dikemacetan lalu lintas dan membutuhkan ruang pertemuan di hotel atau mencari ruang pertemuan terdekat diluar kantor, para pelanggan dapat dengan mudah menemukan ruang yang tepat melalui aplikasi ini.

Aplikasi XWORK pada awalnya diluncurkan di Jakarta dan berencana akan memperluas jaringannya ke wilayah lain.  Pada 3 Desember 2015 yang lalu,  XWORK meluncurkan versi beta di Google Play Store untuk para pengguna Android dan pada awal 2016, XWORK berencana untuk meluncurkan di App Store untuk pengguna IOS.

The House of Masks and Puppets: Education and Entertainment


The House of Masks and Puppets is a place where various kinds of masks and puppets from different regions in Indonesia and around the world have been collected, stored, and displayed for public since 2006. The collection includes more than 1,300 masks and 5,700 puppets. These masks and puppets were collected as a reference can be used for various purposes.

Located just a few miles from the heart of Ubud, the House of Masks and Puppets covers more than 1 hectare of land surrounded by traditional Balinese village and rice fields. The intent and purpose House of Masks & Puppets for preservation – education and entertainment.  “To inspire people to learn about the culture of the past for the benefits of the present and future life,” said Setiadarma, the founder.

At House of Masks & Puppets have a facilities: conference hall, tropical garden, exhibition rooms, performance buildings, Balinese house, wedding venue, theater, discussion room, coffee shop and appreciation as well as an amphitheater with a capacity of 500 people.  Opening hours daily 08.00 am – 16.00 pm.



The House of Masks and Puppets was initiated by Mr. Hadi Sunyoto, a businessman and cultural enthusiast, who has been collecting masks and puppets from different regions in Indonesia for the past seven years. Concerned with the lack of appreciation and awareness towards the disappearing traditional art form of masks and puppets in Indonesia, he decided to create a space to collect, preserve and spread the knowledge of the art form of masks and puppets. As a result, the House of Masks and Puppets was built in 2006.




The use of the word house for the space is used to signify the space as a place for activities, just like a house is. Although it has been a private cultural space, access to the space and its collection has been made available to the public. Since its opening, therefore, several exhibitions and activities have been held on a regular basis.


Collection
The collection of the House of Masks and Puppets currently consists of approximately 7000 items, of which 1300 are masks from Indonesia, Africa, and Japan; whilst the other 5700 are puppets from Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Although the House of Masks and Puppets has several objects from other countries, the collection mostly consists of items from various regions in Indonesia. The acquisition of various masks and puppets from other countries is intended for additional learning, appreciation, and understanding of other cultures.

The House of Masks and Puppets is still actively collecting by purchasing or receiving donations from various sources, including from passionate visitors, collectors, and foreign artists who live in Indonesia.

The collections of the House of Masks and Puppets are housed in four different traditional Javanese antique houses or commonly known as Joglo. These unique Joglos are mostly originated from East and Middle Java. They are made out of good quality teak wood, and have been put up to help keep their preservation.

The House of Masks and Puppets is located within more than ten thousand square meters area. It consists of four exhibition spaces, an open field, a tropical Balinese garden and a performance stage. The area is available for hire and is suitable for different purposes, including performances, trainings, family/school/group outings, and filming.
