Sudamala Suites
& Villas Sanur has re-launched its prime, curbside, all-day dining
restaurant as ‘Ares Steak & Pasta’. The restaurant has refocused and pared
back the menu, beefed-up quality, and made a commitment to play to its
strengths as the artistic district’s home of sublime steaks, signature sauces
and pasta nonpareil.

Ares Steak &
Pasta is poised to claim the mantle of Sanur’s leading lounge lizard lair, art
maven haven and creator of comfort food for connoisseurs, with its colourful
sofa-style seating, fairy-lit al fresco vibe and prime street corner location
in the beating heart of Bali’s most venerable precinct of art, heritage and
culture.
The new-look
restaurant enjoys pride of place in front of the private and exclusive Sudamala
Suites & Villas, Sanur; a hotel created as a living art gallery for its
owners’ extensive collection of contemporary Indonesian art and the showcase
Sudakara Art Space. It is part of Sudamala Resorts which also owns and operates
Sudamala Suites & Villas Senggigi, in neighbouring Lombok.
Emily Subrata,
Director for Sudamala Resorts, said she was delighted to announce the rebirth
of Ares Steak & Pasta, a concept created from a frank and critical look at
the resort’s all-day dining restaurant.
“We have a
fantastic and unique space at Ares, which is part of the hotel yet outside its
main courtyards and wings, opening off our Sudakara Art Space and overlooking
one of Sanur’s most bustling and vivid streetscapes. With its raised decking
and colourful sofa-style seating, it’s a natural habitat for perfecting your
lounge act or just hanging out and watching the world go by.

“Now it has the
food concept the space deserves. After we took a long hard look at what was
working and where there was room for improvement, we decided to go back to
basics while at the same time building on our reputation for quality.
“The name says it
all really. Ares Steak & Pasta – great steaks, awesome pasta and the warm,
smiling service for which we are renowned. I’m thrilled to announce that we are
open for business and I look forward to welcoming new guests, loyal regulars
and anyone else who visits our beloved Sanur.”
Ares Steak &
Pasta has staked its reputation and success on the appeal of three signature
dishes: Steak with Signature Sudamala Sauce (with sweet soy beurre blanc
sauce), Steak with Bongkot Bali Sauce (finely chopped torch ginger in a light
creamy sauce, inspired by the traditional Balinese sambal bongkot, with a
European twist), and Pasta Emilie, named in honour of the chosen lunchtime
comfort food preferred and often ordered in the restaurant by Ms Subrata.
“Essentially it's
bolognese, but with a generous helping of hot chopped chili,” Ms Subrata said.
“It’s what I order for lunch almost every day when I’m in Bali.”

Each dish is
created with verve, flair and experience by head chef, I Nyoman Sutawa, who
joined Sudamala Resorts after being spotted as a rising star at Oberoi Lombok
and other leading Bali and Lombok resorts and restaurants.
Ms Subrata said
Ares Steak & Pasta had ‘reengineered’ its entire menu, paring back and
refining the offerings, but retaining popular dishes including nasi goreng,
traditional fried chicken, and international dishes like tapas, pizzas,
sandwiches and burgers.
She said the new
Ares Steak & Pasta was also a good fit with the ‘sense of spaciousness
infused with local culture and arts and friendly hospitality’ that inspired the
creation of Sudamala Suites & Villas Sanur.
Its proximity to
Sudakara Art Space also presented possibilities for art-inspired events,
special menus and more, of which Ms Subrata said: "Watch this space.”
Sanur was the
original destination preferred by foreign travellers that inspired and gave
rise to the legend of Bali as the ‘island of the gods’. Over the years it has
become an artistic melting pot inspiring local as well as western artists – the
likes of Adrian Jean Le Mayeur, Miguel Covarrubias and Walter Spies. Sanur
still retains much of the laid-back, old world charm it is famous for.

Romantic Dinner Set Up |
Sudamala's 34
luxurious and comfortable suites are nestled around two spacious inner
courtyards – one a lush lawn with performance space on either end, the other
featuring a large, shimmering swimming pool – both lending to the hotel's
tranquil atmosphere.
At its heart,
however, is its art space. Sudakara Art Space brings to reality the vision
behind the hotel: a place where artists, art collectors and enthusiasts, as
well as resort guests, can come together to create, discuss or simply
appreciate art. The 250-square-metre art space features periodic exhibitions
mainly by local artists and foreign artists residing in Bali.
