Sotheby’s is delighted to present the sale of Finest & Rarest Wines: Featuring Burgundy Direct from Maison Camille Giroud on Saturday, 23 May 2015 at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery. Major highlights include the first winery-direct offering in Asia from Maison Camille Giroud, rare and collectible whiskies including bottle #1 of ‘The Last Drop’ 50 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky, and first-class wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône Valley. A total of 421 lots estimated at HK$10 – 14 million/US$1.3 – 1.8 million will go under the hammer.

Burgundy Direct from Maison Camille Giroud – The 150-year-old Winery’s First Winery-Direct Offering in Asia
A total of 66 lots of red and white Burgundies direct from Camille Giroud, spanning close to 40 vintages from 1976 to 2012 will be offered. Highlights include the very rare Musigny 1976 and top vintages of Corton Charlemagne, Chambertin, Charmes Chambertin, Chassagne Montrachet “les Vergers”, Corton “Le Rognet”, Volnay “les Lurets” and Gevrey Chambertin “Lavaux St. Jacques”.

Commenting on this ex-cellar Burgundy collection, Robert Sleigh, Head of Sotheby’s Wine, Asia, says, “Established in 1865, Camille Giroud was always a wonderful source for mature Burgundies, having built its reputation on producing long-lived wines that were not released until the owners deemed them ready to drink.”

Modern vineyard methods combined with old vines and traditional winemaking techniques have established Maison Camille Giroud as part of Burgundy’s past, present and future.”

The First Bottle of ‘The Last Drop’ 50 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky
Bottle #1 of ‘The Last Drop’ 50 Year Old (of only 388 bottles ever produced) is donated by Crown Wine Cellars as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Crown Worldwide Group. Proceeds from the sale of the bottle will benefit Hong Kong-based charity Sunshine Action, which is dedicated to helping those suffering from poverty, hardship and sickness.

‘The Last Drop’ 50 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky is composed of 82 different whiskies – 70 malts and 12 grains – many from distilleries that no longer exist. In 1972, the majority was bottled and sold as a premium 12-year-old; however, three barrels were overlooked in the warehouse until being discovered in 2008. By then, most of the whisky had evaporated, leaving only enough to produce a total of 388 bottles. ‘The Last Drop’ 50 Year Old was named Blended Scotch Whisky of the Year in 2014 by The Whisky Advocate Awards. The bottle is estimated at HK$50,000 – 100,000/US$6,500 – 13,000.

Urban Transportation

Transportasi umum selalu menjadi persoalan di kota-kota besar, apalagi Jakarta yang infrastrukturya belum terbentuk. Untunglah di era digital ini, hambatan tersebut sedikit teratasi. Paling tidak, ada pengusaha transportasi yang memanfaatkan kemacetan kota dengan menawarkan kemudahan pemesanan jasa taksi dan ojek  lewat aplikasi di ponsel.

Setelah Go-Jek dan GrabTaxi, muncul Uber, brand yang sudah ada sejak 2009 di San Francisco. Jika Anda memesan via Uber, yang menjemput bukanlah taksi atau ojek, tapi mobil pribadi sejenis Avanza, Xenia, Innova, bahkan Alphard. Konsumen tentunya makin diuntungkan, mereka saling bersaing dengan menawarkan promo menarik, salah satunya potongan harga. Bukan Perusahaan Transportasi

Go-Jek, startup lokal yang 100 persen asli produk Indonesia, merupakan layanan yang bergerak di bidang transportasi dan kurir yang berbasis sistem teknologi. Pengguna cukup mengunduh aplikasinya di smartphone, lalu mengikuti petunjuk cara memesan ojek. Layanan ini menggandeng tukang ojek bergabung sebagai mitra bisnisnya.

Begitu pun Uber, sejatinya adalah perusahaan teknologi yang menghubungkan penumpang dengan pengemudi untuk mendapatkan transportasi yang aman dan nyaman. Uber di Jakarta bermitra dengan perusahaan layanan jasa rental mobil.

Di Australia dan Amerika, pengemudi profesional dengan mobil yang berizin komersial dapat mendaftar menjadi sopir Uber tanpa harus bernaung di bawah perusahaan rental. Hingga saat ini, Uber telah tersebar di lebih dari 300 kota di 55 negara di seluruh dunia.

Begitu pula dengan GrabTaxi, yang bermula sebagai MyTeksi di Malaysia pada Juli 2011, dan resmi diluncurkan pada 5 Juni 2012. Anthony Tan dan Hooi Ling Tan, pendiri GrabTaxi, adalah alumnus Harvard Business School yang tergerak menciptakan aplikasi ini setelah mendengar cerita dari teman dan saudara mereka mengenai betapa mengerikannya taksi di Kuala Lumpur. Banyak taksi yang tidak mau menyalakan argometer, ada negosiasi tarif dengan penumpang, dan rute pun diputar-putar.

“Karena itulah mereka membuat aplikasi mengenai transportasi di smartphone yang diikutkan dalam kompetisi di Harvard dan berhasil menjadi juara kedua. Hadiah uang dalam kompetisi itu kemudian dijadikan modal dasar pengembangan aplikasi tersebut,” kata Kiki Rizki, Head of Marketing GrabTaxi, kepada MALE.

Negara-negara di Asia Tenggara menjadi konsentrasi ekspansi GrabTaxi saat ini, dan akhirnya Juni 2014 merambah Indonesia sebagai negara keenam setelah beroperasi di Malaysia, Singapura, Filipina, Thailand, serta Vietnam. Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta Culinary Team Wins Five Medals @ Indonesia Salon Culinaire 2015

Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta is proud to share the success of its culinary team at the 10th Salon Culinaire during Food and Hotel Indonesia 2015 Expo, held recently in JIExpo, Kemayoran from 15 to 18 April 2015. The team brought back one gold medal, one silver medal, and three bronze medals from the competition.

Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta team took away a gold medal from the ‘Seafood Challenge’ with Aghie Abdilla from Lyon’s creation of La Sole – a slow braised sole fish fillet served with mashed purple potato, scallop and prawn rolls, fruit and vegetable salad, and a creamy oyster emulsion. A silver medal was secured by Fredy Yoesup, the hotels’ Assistant Pastry Chef, during the ‘Plated Dessert – Practical’ challenge. The bronze medal was awarded to the team of Trimega Wilaputra and R. Bayu Adhi Nugroho from Cinnamon on the ‘Australian Beef Challenge’ and to Ega Permana from Lyon for his performance in the ‘5-course Set Dinner Menu – Fine Dining’ challenge. A total of six diplomas were received in addition during the competition.

The team of ten young and talented chefs was trained intensively by Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta’s Executive Chef, Thierry Le Queau, to prepare the dishes to a strict time frame while keeping the taste, finesse, presentation, hygiene and cleanliness.

“I am very proud of our team on winning five medals and six diplomas at Indonesia’s most prestigious culinary competition. We have also won a few medals in last year’s competition. This shows how our team has continuously improved their performance in bringing out the best, for themselves and also the hotel”, said Sebastian Gassen, Director of Food & Beverage of Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta.

The Bali Sunset Experience

Bali is renowned for its legendary sunsets, and in the late afternoons a daily ritual takes place as hundreds of residents and visitors make their way to the beaches on the west coast to farewell the sun as it sets behind the horizon. While enjoying a cocktail or an icy cold beer, many people are hoping to see the much-coveted green flash – a fleeting spot of intense green light an instant after sunset, caused by light refracting in the atmosphere. This is best seen when the sun sets over the ocean, when it is absolutely clear all the way to the horizon, but be warned it will be gone in the blink of an eye, so don’t blink!

At the end of the day, however, this isn’t the only sunset phenomenon in Bali. Visitors also flock to Pura Tanah Lot, one of the island’s most dramatic and venerated sea temples, dedicated to the sea spirits and founded by Nirartha, one of the last Majapahit priests to come from Java in the 16th century. The temple is perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock just at the edge of the frothing white surf and glistening black shoreline, and is probably the most photographed sight in Bali. It can only be reached at low tide and the surrounding rocks are rumoured to be inhabited by sea snakes. The best, albeit the most crowded, time to visit is in the late afternoon when you can see the splendid profile of the temple silhouetted against the setting sun.

Likewise, Pura Luhur Uluwatu, on the southwest tip of the Bukit Peninsula cannot be missed. This 11th century temple is balanced on the very edge of a narrow rocky cape, overhanging perpendicular cliffs 70 metres above the crashing breakers of the Indian Ocean. Its grey volcanic stone, glowing with the radiant colours of the setting sun, will leave you with a lasting and haunting memory of spiritual Bali. While here, you may also wish to watch the famous Kecak Dance, which is performed daily at 6pm. If you get a good seat at the back of the amphitheatre, you will also get a view of the sunset.
